Staff:Child Ratios
By increasing the qualifications of staff in your setting, you can offer more places for children with funded childcare hours. Download our poster with the extended funded childcare hours explained.
Early Years Programmes
We offer a full suite of funded programmes for practitioners to gain qualifications in Early Years while they work in your setting.
Early Years Practitioner Level 2 Apprenticeship
Entry-level programme that gives you the knowledge, skills and behaviours to care for children in an EYFS setting.
For ratios, at least 50% of your staff need to hold a Level 2 qualification.
Early Years Educator Level 3 Apprenticeship
Grow your practice with the Level 3 qualification.
From the start of the training, they count as a Level 2, contributing to the required 50%. Once achieved, Level 3 practitioners count towards the staff:child ratios.
Early Years Lead Practitioner Level 5 Apprenticeship
Progress your practice to take on leadership responsibilities such as supervisor or head of room. Develop skills in child development and operational practices.
If an apprentice has completed their full and relevant Level 3 qualification before beginning the programme, they will count as a Level 3 towards ratios while training and after completion.
Early Years Initial Teacher Training (EYITT)
This postgraduate, 12-month programme, awards Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS).
From the start of the training, trainees count as Level 3 in the staff:child ratio; once EYTS is achieved, they count at 1:13 for 3-4 year olds.
Playworker Level 2 Apprenticeship
Gain qualified Playworkers in your after-school club, holiday club, leisure centre and many other settings that hold sessions for children.
Need help recruiting extra staff to meet the demand for funded places?
What are the advantages of apprenticeships?
The apprenticeship route is a work-based training programme, meaning you can get extra help and support from new apprentices right away.
All the learning is completed within your setting with regular tutor visits and work based training tasks. The knowledge apprentices will learn will be practical and relevant, no box ticking exercises!
You can help support employees to develop the skills needed to work within your individual setting and build confident, reliable practitioners.
How are the programmes funded?
Apprenticeships are fully funded for learners aged between 16-21.
For all other learners, the apprenticeships are funded by the Apprenticeship Levy. If your setting or Local Authority pays into the Levy, the programme is 100% funded.
If they do not pay into the Levy, the employer will have to co-invest 5% of the total programme fees, with the Government paying the remaining 95%.
Levy transfers are also available when larger companies can gift a portion of their Levy to cover the training costs.
More details can be found on the Government website.
Our Apprenticeships team will support your setting throughout the funding process.
For EYITT, the programme is fully funded by the Department for Education with a £7000 employer incentive per learner.
Where can those with Early Years Teacher Status lead teaching?
Early Years Teachers can work in all private, voluntary and independent (PVI) early years settings which is where the majority of children and early years provision is based. They can also work in free schools, academies and independent schools, which can employ teaching staff without the requirement for them to have QTS.
I have a Level 5 qualification and want to do a degree top-up. Where can I do this?
Best Practice Network have a relationship with Nottingham Trent University, who offer a 12 month online top-up degree in Childhood and Education Studies.
Once you have completed this programme, you can apply to begin your EYITT with Best Practice Network.
